2024-12

I’ve just returned from a week in the US Virgin Islands, a place I’d been fascinated by for a long time. I wrote a post about it. It was a little vacation-from-my-vacation as I’d just been on a fairly grueling spell of travel, having spent weeks in China, followed by fleeing to Canada briefly to avoid the US election, a wedding in Portland, and then a series of rather special poker games in Los Angeles.

You can probably expect a post and photo album about the China trip, eventually. I’m months behind on processing my raw files from the Real Camera.

In the few days between LA and St Thomas, I purchased an Elegoo Neptune 3 Max high-print-volume (420mm x 420mm x 500mm) 3D printer, and have learned a little bit about how to use it. I’m in the process of learning how to clumsily model things in Blender so I can make custom Gridfinity modules.

2024-05

I’ve been writing a lot of go code lately. I have issues with working memory, and I basically never remember syntax, so doing simple, common, boilerplate operations takes me longer than it “should”. It turns out, LLMs are great at remembering syntax, so with the help of an LLM, it turns me back into the 5-7x programmer I once was.

I told a friend at OpenAI yesterday, “you guys have made the most useful tool since the text editor”, and I think perhaps it’s true.

It’s a good time to be alive.
